Up and Over Hunter and Combined Training Association

UP AND OVER MISSION STATEMENT
To promote goodwill, sportsmanship, learning, and competition in all aspects of hunter-jumper, combined training and dressage.
DEFINITIONS
Show Age:
Age eligibility of an individual determined by his or her age as of December 1 of the previous year. This age remains the same
for the entire show season regardless of chronological age.
Junior:
An individual who is 17 years or younger as of December 1 of the previous year.
Adult:
An individual who is older than 17 years as of December 1 of the previous year.
Amateur:
An adult who does not receive any type of compensation for riding, training, or showing another’s horse or teaching, coaching,
or training others.
Professional:
An adult who receives compensation for riding, training, or showing another’s horse or teaching, coaching or training others.
PROTESTS
Formal protests must be in writing and sent o the Board of Up and Over. The Board will make any changes necessary and the
decision of the Board is final.
COMBINED TRAINING
Open to all riders. Riders to follow USEA rules.
Points must be compiled by the COMPETITOR. Send placings, division and number of competitors in that division to Up and
Over by November 30th of each year.
To accumulate points, all owners, riders, and lessees must be members of Up and Over and have nominated themselves in
Combined Training.
DRESSAGE
Open to all riders. Riders to follow USDF rules.
Points must be compiled by the COMPETITOR. Send placings, division and number of competitors in that division to Up and
Over by November 30th of each year.
To accumulate points, all owners, riders, and lessees must be members of Up and Over and have nominated themselves in
Dressage.
HUNTER/JUMPER GENERAL RULES
1. Protective headgear is required for all riders when mounted. ASTM-SEI approved protective headgear is REQUIRED for
all junior riders when mounted.
2. All classes are open to horses or ponies unless specifically stated in the class description.
3. There is no limit on the age of the rider unless specifically stated in the class description.
4. Riders will not be asked to back their mounts unless they are competing in the Open Hunt Seat Equitation or
Miscellaneous Pleasure Hunter classes.
5. Equipment Rules:
Standing Martingales are permitted in all over fences classes and all flat classes in Walk-Trot Not to Jump, Walk-Trot
Rider Cross Rails, Walk-Trot Horse Cross Rails, Extremely Green Rider, Extremely Green Horse, Baby Green Horse and
Beginner Rider. However, some judges, at their discretion, may penalize the use of martingales.
Auxiliary reins, such as draw reins, are not permitted in
any classes.
Non-Standard nosebands (i.e. Flash, Figure Eight and Drop) in Hunters as defined by the USEF will not be permitted.
Jumpers may use nosebands as defined by the USEF for their division.
Extra leg protection for the horse, including open front or galloping boots, leg wraps, etc., is not permitted except in
equitation and during inclement weather at the judge’s discretion.
6. Trotting and/or improper leads on corners are not to be heavily penalized in Extremely Green, Beginner Rider, Baby Green
Horse and Adult 2’ classes over fences. However, some judges, at their discretion, may penalize these faults.
7. Extreme speed at any time will be penalized.
8. Classes may be split at the discretion of the show committee.
9. Participation in a division at THREE Up & Over point approved
shows is required to qualify for year-end awards.
10. Divisions can be split and given separate year-end awards for
horses and riders if participation in that division warrants.
11. Points accumulated in classes where less that 6 entries compete
will NOT affect a rider’s eligibility for that division.
12. All owners and lessees must be paid members of Up & Over for
the points to count.
13. Rider/Horse combinations may be notified when they are no
longer eligible to compete in limited divisions.
14. Horse/Rider may move up into higher division during the show
year, but points do not carry from one division to the next. The
combination will, however, be eligible for year-end awards in all
nominated divisions.
15. Points will begin to accumulate upon the receipt of paid membership for the current year.

NOTE: The number of participants is determined by the number of horses going in the first over fences class.
HUNTER DIVISION
Judging Criteria
Pleasure:
The horse is judged on manners, performance, way of going, and suitability to be a pleasure horse.
Hunter under Saddle:
The horse is judged on performance, quality, and suitability to be a hunter.
Equitation:
The rider is judged on the hands, seat, leg, guidance, and control of horse.
Hunter Over Fences:
The horse is judged on performance and manners over a simple course of not less than six jumps.
UP AND OVER DIVISIONS AND HIGH POINT AWARDS
Year-end awards will be given to the high point and reserve high point horse or rider through 8th place. Points must be
accumulated at Up and Over point shows. In order to be eligible for points, the exhibitor, owner, and lessee must be members in
good standing of Up and Over, and must compete in their divisions in at least three Up and Over point shows throughout the
year. Awards will be presented at the Annual Up and Over Awards Banquet.
UP AND OVER HORSE/PONY OF THE YEAR
Awarded to the horse accumulating the most points throughout the year in Up and Over point approved Hunter Division classes.
Only points accumulated in classes where the horse is being judged will be counted. There will be two divisions: one for horses
shown by Junior exhibitors, and one for horses being shown by adult exhibitors. The winner will receive a special award
presented at the banquet. All owners, lessee and exhibitors must be members in good standing of Up and Over. Exhibitors must
compete in their divisions in at least three Up and Over point approved shows throughout the year for points to count.
HUNTER DIVISIONS
Leadline
This division is for riders under the show age of 8 that have never shown in any equestrian discipline. Rider may not enter in any
other division. “Special needs” riders may have age requirements waived by show committee.
Walk/Trot - Not to Jump
Open to riders of all ages not yet capable of competing in Walk/Trot/Canter classes. Slight mistakes not to be heavily penalized.
Participants are no longer eligible once the rider has competed in a canter class or in an over fences class. No cross entering to
Walk-Trot Rider over fences or other upper divisions .Riders are no longer eligible to compete in this division after they
have won the year end Championship or Reserve twice. Note: If entries warrant, classes may be split and separate year-
end awards will be given by age groups. Equitation class will not count toward year-end championship but will be included in the
Equitation Division awards.
Walk/Trot Rider
This division is for riders who are not yet capable of cantering in competition. Riders are ineligible once they have competed at
any time in a regular Walk/Trot/Canter class or competed in classes with fence heights greater that 18”. Slight mistakes will not
be heavily penalized. Riders are no longer eligible after they have won the year-end Championship or Reserve.
Walk/Trot Horse
This division is for horses of any age that are not yet capable of cantering in competition. Horse is ineligible once it has
competed at any time in a regular Walk/Trot/Canter class or competed in classes with fence heights greater that 18”. Slight
mistakes will not be heavily penalized. Open to all riders. Horse is no longer eligible after it has won the year-end Championship
or Reserve.
Extremely Green Rider (fence height 18”)
This division is open to Riders just learning to canter and who have never jumped in classes exceeding 2’3”. No more than SIX
entries to canter at one time. Course may be trotted. Slight mistakes will not be heavily penalized. Competitors in this division
may cross enter into Beginner Rider, but are not eligible for Miscellaneous Hack classes. Note: Once a rider has won the year-
end championship twice, he or she is no longer eligible for this division.
Children’s Hunter (fence heights 2’9” – 3’3”)
This division is for Junior riders who have not exceeded fence
heights of 3’6”. May not cross enter into Junior Hunter at the
same show.
Low Hunter (fence heights 2’6” or 2’9”)
This division is open to all horses, ponies, and riders.
Miscellaneous Pleasure Hunter Classes
This division is for riders to show at walk/trot /canter and
possibly hand gallop and extended trot. If you are competing in
Extremely Green Horse Division or Extremely Green Rider
Division, you are NOT eligible for this Division. Championship
awarded to the horse accumulating the most points at Up and Over
shows. Martingales are prohibited in all flat classes of this
division.
Hunter in Hand
This division is open to all Competitors. Judged on way of moving,
conformation, quality, substance, soundness, manners, and
suitability as a hunter or to become a hunter. Minor blemishes not
the fault of poor conformation not to be heavily penalized. Horses
to be moved on the line at a walk and trot. To be shown in
appropriate bridle (except weanlings). Unsound entries must be
eliminated. Classes may be divided or combined as entries warrant.
Equitation
This division is open to all Junior and Adult Amateur riders.
Year-end awards will be given in Adult Amateur, Junior 13 and
under, and Junior 14 -17. Judged on rider’s hands, guidance, and
control of horse. USEF additional tests optional. Note: Points
accumulated in equitation classes on the flat shall not affect
rider’s status in classes over fences. Points accumulated in
equitation classes over fences SHALL affect a rider’s status in
classes not to jump. If entries warrant, year-end awards may be
given in each rider division.
Extremely Green Horse (fence height 18”)
This division is open to horses of any age just learning to canter, who have never jumped in classes exceeding 2’3”. No more
than SIX entries to canter at one time. Course may be trotted. Competitors in this division may cross enter into Baby Green
Horse Division classes, but are not eligible for Miscellaneous Hack classes. Note: Once a horse has won the year-end
championship twice, it is no longer eligible. Slight mistakes will not be heavily penalized.
Beginner Rider (fence height 2’ – 2’3”)
This division is for riders who have not exceeded 2’6” over fences. Judged on manners, performance, and soundness over a
simple course of not less that six jumps. Manners and suitability are emphasized. Trotting is permitted. Competitors are no longer
eligible when they have won the year-end championship or reserve twice.
Baby Green Horse (fence height 2’ – 2’3”)
This division is for horses with very limited show experience that have not exceeded 2’6” in over fences classes. . Judged on
manners, performance, and soundness over a simple course of not less that six jumps. Manners and suitability are emphasized.
Trotting is permitted. Horses are no longer eligible once they have won the year-end championship and or reserve twice.
Adult Rider (fence height 2’ – 2’3”)
This division is for amateur riders show age 18 years and over. May not cross enter into divisions with fence heights greater than
2’6”. This is not a division for green horses ridden by trainers. Riders are not eligible for this division if they have competed in
over fences classes with fence heights greater than 2’6” in the last THREE years.
Intermediate Rider (fence height 2’6”)
This division is for Juniors and Amateurs who have not shown over fences exceeding 2’9” in height.
Low Adult Rider (fence height 2’6”)
This division is for Adult Amateur riders to jump 2’6”.
Adult Amateur Hunter (fence heights 2’9” – 3’3”)
This division is for Adult Amateur riders. Same horse/rider combination cannot cross enter into Adult Rider 2’ or classes higher
than 3’3”.
THE UP AND OVER CHALLENGE MEDAL
Consists of two divisions, to be judged and pinned separately but can be run concurrently.
Division one (1) is open to current Junior members, 17 and under. Division two (2) is open to current Adult members who are
not professionals. Exhibitors must be mounted on horses/ponies, mares/geldings, Adult members may show stallions.
Class to consist of a course of at least 8 fences with 2 changes of direction. Top 4 riders in each division, will be called back for
further testing. (USEF tests 1-19) Three competitors must complete the class for points to count. Points awarded 6-5-4-3-2-1.
The top 8 point earners will qualify for the year end Championship competition. (Must compete in 3 shows to advance to
the finals in October).
Heights to be 2'-2’3" or 2’6"-2’9". Exhibitors may not compete at a fence height lower that currently showing. Heights in the
Junior Division will be judged and pinned together. Heights in the Adult Division will be judged and pinned together. NOTE:
Points are never doubled regardless of the fact that the classes may be offered at a double point show.
JUMPER DIVISION:
This Division is open to horses and ponies, Juniors and Adults unless otherwise stated on prize list. Horse/Rider combination
may compete in no more than TWO consecutive divisions at one show. (Example: Cannot do jumpers at 2’ and 3’ with same
horse/rider combination at same show).
